Where Can I Install My Safe?

14th May 2023

Are you thinking of getting a safe to protect your valuables and important documents? Smart move! But have you thought about where you’ll install the safe? Deciding on the location is a crucial step in the process, as it will affect the type and size of safe you’ll need.

Let’s explore the best places to install a safe in your home and the places you should avoid.

Best Places to Install a Safe

1. Underfloor Safe:

Investing in an underfloor safe is an effective way to keep your safe hidden from plain sight. However, this option may not be feasible for everyone, especially those who have already built their home. If you are building your home from scratch and looking for underfloor-safe options, check out some of our offerings.

2. If you are in a burglar-prone area:

We suggest placing your safe in a less prominent location, such as a home office, coat closet, or guest bedroom closet. By blending the safe in a less obvious area with your surroundings, you reduce the chances of it being easily located by burglars.

3. If you are in a fire-risk area:

We recommend that you keep the safe in a location that is least likely to be affected by fire, such as a basement or lower building level. Ensure the safe is fire-resistant and tested to withstand high temperatures. Consider keeping the safe below a sprinkler if you know it is waterproof to keep your valuables safe from fire. However, it is important to note that while a fireproof safe can protect the contents inside from fire, it may not be able to protect the contents, such as a hard drive or a pen drive, from high temperatures caused by fire.

4. If your area is prone to flooding:

It is recommended to install your safe above ground level on the topmost floor to avoid water damage. However, be aware that a heavy-duty safe can be heavy. You need to make sure the safe is supported by load-bearing beams to withstand the weight of the safe. Consider bolting the safe to a concrete floor or an external wall for added security.

5. Accessibility:

Consider the person who will use the safe and the frequency of its usage. If older adults will be using the safe or if it needs to be accessed frequently, place it in an easily accessible location.

Where Not to Keep Your Safe

While the master bedroom or garage may seem like obvious choices, they are not recommended because

1. In the master bedroom:

Burglars often look for valuables in the master bedroom first, so we do not recommend putting your safe there.

2. In the garage:

The garage is typically the least secure area of the house, with a higher risk of burglary, fire, flooding, and other disasters. Garage doors are often left unlocked and open, making it easy for intruders to enter where the safes can be quickly located, broken into, or removed.

Extra Precautions

To ensure maximum safety for your valuables, fix your safe to a sturdy part of the building that is difficult to remove, such as a concrete floor, foundation, or external wall. Avoid mounting the safe on a wooden surface, as it can easily be pried out of place.

If you have underfloor heating, avoid drilling into the floorboards, be mindful of any pipes that may run under the flooring, and review your building’s plans if necessary. If you are unsure of what lies beneath, it is best to seek the assistance of an experienced safe installation expert.

Insurance Provider Compliance

If your insurance provider has asked you to purchase a safe, check with them about what kind of safe you need to buy. Some insurance providers may require you to bolt the safe to a floor or a wall for maximum protection.

By taking these extra precautions, you can ensure that your safe provides the fullest security and peace of mind.
